Abstract

The article examines the state of Russian-Chinese relations and different approaches to the study of this issue. It is shown that the Chinese side is guided by the concept of a “new type of relations of the Great Powers” (新型大国关系, xīnxíng dàguó guānxì) in building cooperation with Russia over the last twenty years. China sees Russia as a partner because the Russian government does not criticize the Chinese political system, but today there are significant differences between the two countries in foreign policy, which primarily concerns their competing integration projects in Eurasia (the Eurasian Customs Union and the new “Silk Road”). Russia and China are moving to developing a “soft alliance”, which may only be related to the expansion of political cooperation. It is demonstrated that the most important features of modern relations between Russia and China are: 1) a growing asymmetry in favor of China; 2) Russia is no longer a major issue of China’s foreign policy, but only one of the main elements of the overall strategy of China. Particular attention is paid to the influence of “the Ukrainian crisis” on the cooperation between Russia and China, which has led to a reconfiguration of their strategic partnership.
