Abstract
This publication presents the Ukrainian translation of the sixth and seventh chapters of Bhagavadgita, composed perhaps in the 1st or 2nd century CE that is the most famous of the Hindu Scriptures.
The sixth chapter is titled Yoga of Self-Control. According to the Indian commentary tradition, this chapter is the end of the First Part of the Bhagavadgita – The Section on the Action (karma-kāṇḍa). The first verses once again emphasize the superiority of internal detachment over external renunciation. The text calls a person to emancipate himself by his own self; and not degrade himself; for he himself is his friend as well as his enemy. Five verses briefly describe the meditation technique. Krishna is proclaimed as the highest object of meditation. In the chapter necessary conditions for doing Yoga are listed. One of these requirements is the rejection of extremes in diet and in other aspects of life. Through persistent practice, the yogi achieves highest happiness. This separation from assumed union with pain is called Yoga.
The seventh chapter is titled Yoga of Knowledge and Realization. The Section on Worship (upāsanā-kāṇḍa), which also consists of six chapters, begins from there. From the beginning of the chapter it is postulated that the highest perfection is realization of Krishna. He is the Source of spirit and matter, the Master of Maya or Illusion. Everything is permeated by Him like rows of gems are strung on the thread. His worshipers can realize Him even at the hour of death.
The concepts and realities considered in these chapters are explained by the translator in notes, with quotations from the Mahabharata, as well as by citing the Rigveda, Vedanta Sutras, Yoga Sutras, Laws of Manu, Arthashastra, Samkhya Karika, Upanishads, Puranas and other classical texts of Hinduism.
