“CHINA THREAT” IN THE GLOBAL CONTEXT: THEORY AND REAL CHALLENGES

Abstract
The article describes main points of the modern formulation of the “China threat theory” and the whole range of views on the rise of China as a danger to world order and judgment of Chinese scientists and the international perception of the concept. It presents various manifestations of the “China threat theory” in academic publications and periodicals. It is shown that proponents of this concept believe that China will not escape the logic of the superpowers and the rise of China will pose a threat to neighbors and challenge US interests in East Asia. It identified the main arguments of opponents of the “China threat theory”: 1) limitation of aggressive behavior, 2) justification of non-aggression history, 3) refutation of redundancy in military spending, 4) anti-Chinese prejudice, 5) safety advantage over the threat. It expressed the view that further development of the “China threat theory” will be influenced by three factors: 1) the crisis of modern Western capitalist models of economic development and growth of the attractiveness of the “China model”; 2) the assumption that China will become more expansionary country; 3) an identity crisis in Western countries, and especially in the USA, can affect a greater demonization of China.
