THE PARAPHRASES OF THE BIBLICAL POETRY IN THE TARGUM ONQELOS: ELEMENTS OF ESCHATOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION

Abstract
This article is concerned with the analysis of paraphrases of the biblical poetry in the Targum Onqelos – Jewish translation of the Torah (Pentateuch) into Aramaic which was made in I–III centuries. The main problem is the presence of additional materials, which were not rendered from the original text, just in the poetical texts (the prose is translated literally in the Targum Onqelos). Why the translator preferred the loose translation to the close-to-original translation in rendering poetical texts? What insertions were added to the translated text and how they are connected with the liturgical use of the targums? This article is concerned with these questions.
