Abstract
The author shows a great importance of the A. P. Kovalivsky’s book which occupies a significant place in the history of Ukrainian Oriental studies. It contains a research paper of the book creator about studying of the Orient in the Kharkiv University and in the city of Kharkiv in the XVIIIth–XXth centuries as well as a reader of samples of translations from different oriental languages done in Kharkiv. Especially valuable are large and rich in content notes prepared by him where he fixed the names of many translators who were victims of the Stalinist repressions and doomed to oblivion. First of all it concerns the literatures of the so-called “Soviet East” to which the author of the book gave important place side by side with the literatures of “foreign East”.
