Abstract

The article is devoted to the place and development of the Pan-Asian idea in the life and work of the Japanese philosopher, scholar and politician Okawa Shumei (1886–1957). The peculiarity of its historical and civilizational approach in comparison with other Pan-Asianist theorists was the widest interpretation of the notion of “Asia” – namely, from Japan to Palestine and Egypt. This is directly related to the Okawa’s Indological and Islamic studies and teaching activities. In the article, three levels at which unfolded in his life and creative Pan-Asian idea are discerned: spiritual (metaphysical), historical and political. In addition, the main stages of the development of the Pan-Asian idea are distinguished. Based on the analysis of the Okawa’s publications, the article shows that China, Chinese culture and philosophy were very important for him. A classification of Okawa’s works on China is proposed: (1) interpretations of Confucian classics; (2) general cultural works; (3) works on current political issues.
