Abstract

This is the 2nd article in a tripartite series on the construction of social and political other in the discourse of the Arab Spring in Egypt. The article provide an analysis of the core semantic structures underlying the concept of FULŪL, a new coinage of the recent Egyptian revolutionary discourse used in reference to political social other. The revolutionary discourse describes FULŪL as engaged in a set of negative acts (wrongdoings, whose ultimate purpose is to impede the progress of REVOLUTION, which is conceived of as purposeful forward going movement of the PEOPLE). The negative acts that FULŪL are engaged in or events that they may cause are understood as resulting from their inherent characteristics. Uncompromising and indiscriminate as they are, FULŪL-centered texts represent instances of a polarizing discourse of exclusion that appears to be a central theme in the Egyptian revolutionary discourse.
