Анотація

Традиційна структура індійського суспільства продовжує бути актуальною та дискусійною темою сьогодні серед соціологів, антропологів, істориків та політологів значною мірою через те, що прояви кастовості можна спостерігати в сучасній демократичній Індії. Історія рефлексій щодо кастової системи сягає колоніальної доби, коли вестернізовані індійці намагалися осмислити місце індійського традиційного соціального порядку в новому
модерному, який надихався західними ідеями егалітаризму та гуманізму. Стаття стосується історії ідей про кастову систему, яка розпочинається з поглядів організації Брагмо-самадж і закінчується поглядами провідних політиків Північної Індії стосовно цього питання. Позиція популярної в Північній Індії релігійно-реформістської організації Ар’я-самадж та її дії, спрямовані на трансформацію кастової системи, також беруться до уваги. Використовуючи методологічний інструмент розміщення позиції конкретного політика, політичної чи релігійно-реформістської організації стосовно кастового питання на шкалі “модерністи – традиціоналісти”, стаття описує спектр думок щодо системи джаті серед політиків Пенджабу та Північно-Західних провінцій у 2-й пол. ХІХ – на поч. ХХ ст. Зроблено висновок, що серед еліт регіону домінували дві позиції – критично-модерністська, якої дотримувалися Б. Н. Дар та Л. Л. Рай, та модерністська, з якою можна співвіднести погляди М. Неру та Т. Б. Сапру. Погляди всіх політиків об’єднані думкою про те, що кастова система в тому вигляді, у якому вона існує на цей момент, несумісна з модерним розвитком країни.
