Abstract
The article presents the results of a study of the content of the first chapter of “The Fragments from the Nogai Epic” from the Kyiv copy of Abu-l-Gazi’s “Shajara-i Turk”, which remains deposited in the Institute of Manuscripts of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. The study was carried out by comparing the content of the “Chapter which describes the Places of Assembly and Habitations” from “Daftar-i Chingiz-name” with the corresponding chapters (dastans) of the Nogai copies of the work (the Berlin manuscript and the “History of the Tatars”), and comparing the content of the Nogai texts with each other as well.
It was found that the Nogai versions of the above mentioned chapter of the “Daftar” in their composition and content are close to the versions originating from the Volga region. However, the fact that they contain phrases bolġan Birki and bolur bir instead of the toponym Bulġar in the manuscript copies from the Volga region suggests that the “Daftar” copies from the Volga region and Nogai environment originate from different protographs and that the common protograph of the Nogai handwritten copies probably dates back to the end of the 17th century.
The variant readings in the dastan from the Berlin manuscript have the character of corruptions, while some changes in the dastan from the “History of the Tatars” indicate a revision of the text. Their compositional proximity proves a common origin, however, some characteristic differences, such as the addition of information about Boz-Agash before Saray to the text, indicate the absence of direct connection between them.
The oldest of the Nogai texts is the dastan from the Berlin manuscript or its protograph. The version from the “History of the Tatars”, which J. von Klaproth has acquired in Mozdok is the next, while the first chapter of “The Fragments…” has appeared later than the said texts. Changes in the content of the first chapter of “The Fragments…” include the reduction of some old data, primarily related to the history of the Volga-Ural region, and the inclusion of new ones, borrowed from the “Daftar” text, from the Nogai heroic epic and other, unidentified sources.
By all appearances, “The Fragments…” first section is a further revision of the version of the “Daftar” chapter from the “History of the Tatars”. Incorrectly established boundaries of some sentences indicate that it has appeared in the North Caucasus, possibly in the Pyatigorsk region. Changes in the text of the first chapter of “The Fragments…” show that at the end of the 17th – 18th centuries written and oral traditions of preserving the memory of the historical past of the Nogais coexisted, closely interacted and complemented each other.
