Abstract

The Acts of the Neapolitan Bishops (Gesta episcoporum Neapolitanorum) is a medieval chronicle compiled in Latin. The chronicle is preserved in a manuscript that is part of the Codex Vaticanus No. 5007, kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library. There are some gaps in the text. The text was first published in Naples in 1753. This translation is based on the text of the Gesta episcoporum neapolitanorum, which was published in 1878 in the section Scriptores rerum langobardicarum et italicarum saec. VI–IX of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Chronologically this historical narrative covers the period from the beginning of the Common Era to the beginning of the 10^th century. Apparently, the Acts of the Neapolitan bishops began to be compiled around the 8^th century. In the 9^th century, the Acts of the Neapolitan bishops were continued by John, deacon of the Church of St. Januarius in Naples; he brought the story to 872. In the 10^th century, the Acts of the Neapolitan bishops were continued by the subdeacon Peter, whose narration is in the end of this source.
