Abstract

Revival of the ideas and tendencies of Asian integration in the beginning of the XXI century makes a research of Pan-Asianism very important today. This article focuses on the Japanese version of Pan-Asianism and the place of China in it. Pan-Asianism is manifested not only in politics but also in culture, economy, religion and so on. It can be combined with different ideology – ‘right’ and ‘left’, imperialist and anti-colonial, liberal and conservative. The article shows that the emergence of Pan-Asianism in Japan in the late XIXth century was caused not only by the threat of the colonial subjugation from the side of the West, but also by a metageographical revolution – the transition from the Sinocentric world model to the Eurocentric, which made the concept of ‘Asia’ a fact of social consciousness and filled it with the geopolitical and geo-cultural content. In the Japanese Pan-Asianist thought this concept had different meanings, but the core of it was East Asia, that is, the Chinese-East Asian macro-civilization system, and its kernel, in turn, was and is China. Therefore, Chinese vector should be considered a main direction for the Japanese Pan-Asianism.
