Abstract

The Christians of the South Caucasus played an important role in the plans of Russia, which is trying to strengthen its position in the region. Russia had plans to establish on the territory of the Azerbaijani khanate puppet states “Albania” and “Armenia”. They planned to create on the territory of Western Azerbaijan, around the city of Iravan. In order to accomplish such a project it was planned to organize the military campaign which were supposed to march led by A. V. Suvorov were planned in the 80’s of XVIII century. This march was postponed because all attention was given to the occupation of Cream. Instead of this the navy expedition was organized with the command of M. Voynovich in 1782. Soon Russia began to strengthen its activity in Southern Caucasus. Russian government began to negotiate about the concession of Northern Azerbaijan lands with Ali Murad khan who took control over Isfahan and its surrounding places. Ali Murad khan wanted to get Russian support for the obtaining shah’s throne. First Ali Murad khan agree to territorial concessions, but changed his mind under pressure from Western diplomats, especially French. Russian Empire stopped the implementation of the project on creation of new states in the South Caucasus.
