THE SUBJECT “EIGHT STUPAS”: THE ORIGINS AND ITS REPRODUCTION ON THE THANGKAS IN THE TRADITION OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM (THANGKA FROM THE BOHDAN AND VARVARA KHANENKO MUSEUM OF ARTS)

Abstract
It should be noted that scholars, in contrast to the previous studies of Buddhist fine arts, are beginning to pay more attention to the relationship between the written text and image, as well as their structure and symbolism in the context of the history and culture of a particular region. The interest to different modifications observed in Buddhist works of fine arts, including thangkas, reproducing traditional subjects, significantly increased. The article focuses on the subject of “Eight stupas,” which is presented at the thangka from the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum of Arts. Buddha Shakyamuni and Buddha Vajradhara are depicted surrounded by stupas. Shakyamuni Buddha and the Buddha Vajradhara are inseparable in Vajrayana tradition. And this indivisibility in art is embodied in the image of the stupa. For understanding the meaning of the thangka, the number of stupas (eight), their composition, the figures of the pantheon, included in the thangka structure, are very important. In this respect, the color palette of thangka is very important too. Thangka “Eight stupas” represents a new version of a familiar subject, which goes back to the tradition of Vajrayana, which gained currency and further developed in Tantric dogmatics and practice of Tibet, Mongolia, and Buriatia.
