Abstract

The objective of this study is to show that the relationship between Korea and Japan during the early Joseon period was quite different from today’s relationship between the two nations. The Joseon government issued visas to the Japanese to control the Japanese entry to Joseon, and it limited the number of ships entering the Joseon. The government even limited the volume of goods loaded on the ships. Joseon’s ‘control policies’ and ‘engagement policies’ towards Japan were to make several social phenomena concrete, but several violation cases occurred in the process. In order to investigate the relationship between Joseon’s policies towards Japan and the crimes committed, this study used new terms (the control policies, the engagement policies), rather than the terms which are being popularly used in the existing academia (the diplomatic policies, the conciliatory policies).
