Abstract
The publication continues the Ukrainian translation of the historical novel “Li Qingzhao” (“李清照”) by the Hong Kong writer Nan Gongbo (南宮搏, 1924–1983). It presents Chapters XI and XII (episodes 146–159), originally serialized from September 28 to October 11, 1960 in the Central Daily News (“中央日報”), then the leading newspaper in Taiwan. The events depicted in this part of the novel take place around the year 1132 and focus on Li Qingzhao’s inner crisis following the death of her husband, the problem of remarriage, and the appearance of Zhang Ruzhou in her life.
The introductory article examines the issue of Li Qingzhao’s second marriage through the prism of Song historical sources and the later Qing scholarly tradition, which sought to deny or conceal this episode of the poetess’s biography. It includes a full translation of the Letter to Hanlin Academician Qi Chongli (“投翰林學士綦崇禮啟”), a key ego-document by Li Qingzhao in which she describes the circumstances of her second marriage to Zhang Ruzhou, domestic violence, the court proceedings, and her imprisonment. The article also analyzes a corpus of Song sources confirming the historical reality of this marriage and discusses Nan Gongbo’s later acknowledgment of his own mistake in denying the poetess’s remarriage under the influence of Qing scholars.
Special attention is paid to the portrayal of Zhang Ruzhou in the novel and its relation to historical sources. The study demonstrates that the writer deliberately transforms this figure: in Li Qingzhao’s letter, Zhang Ruzhou appears as a cruel and self-serving man, whereas Nan Gongbo describes him as an ordinary man who remains spiritually alien to the heroine, whose presence further emphasizes her intellectual loneliness and inner vulnerability.
The notes provide explanations of terms and realities, and brief information about the historical figures mentioned in the text as well.
