Abstract

The article presents some preliminary results of the Egyptian baboon statues/statuettes investigations within the context of the Ancient Egyptian art history and development of religious practices. A granite statue of a baboon crouched from Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Art (inventory Nr. 352 ATK) is the main object of the researches. On the base of the investigations of baboons’ statues/statuettes with known historical or archeological context, an attempt of its contextualization was made. Examination of the statues with the similar material and technique of producing as well as their stylistic features enables to deduce the function and the date of the statue. The large size statues of hard stone (including granite) appear to have belonged to the temple objects. The date of Khanenko’s baboon statue can be defined as the Third Intermediate period and the early Late period.
