BOOK EXCHANGE AS ACQUISITION SOURCE OF THE MIDDLE EAST LIBRARIES

Abstract
The article addresses the issue of book exchange as acquisition source of the Middle East libraries. The study specifically highlights such aspects as terminology, characteristic features of exchange agreements, selection process and accounting for required materials, correspondence, exchange lists compilation, and book exchange principles. We draw attention to the exchange programs of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine with the countries of the Middle East. Statistical tables and diagrams reflecting the status of book exchange between the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine and the Middle-Eastern countries for the periods of 1963–1991 and 2008–2011 years have also been included. The scientific processing of Arabic library resource, obtained through international book exchange, requires the understanding of its role within the foreign library resources system of the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine (compilation of indexes), developing theoretical approaches to scientific bibliographical description of Arabic resources in the library automation system (LAS) Irbis-64, and forming a theoretical basis for LAS Irbis-64 modules creation, which will enable to compile bibliographical indexes of Arabic language materials at the V. I. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.
