Abstract

As we know, environmental and climatic conditions of Central Asia favored husbandry instead of agriculture. Turks and Mongols grazed their animals in large herds. They had to migrate from one climate zone to another, seeking continual pasture and water to feed their herds and increase their yield. Living a life of nomads, the Turkish family did not have a permanent residence. Its house was nothing but a tent which was called “yurt” (home, homeland). Yurt had only one door, which was usually opened to the east. A slightly elevated section that extended across the bottom of a door was the “threshold.” The belief of threshold in the cultures of Judaism and Christianity was also present in the Turkish and Mongolian belief systems. Ancient Turks believed that the house or tent they slept or lived in had a guardian spirit. In this respect, the threshold, which served as a protective spirit in a religious sense, was also the boundary line when being summoned before the ruler and stepping on it was prohibited.
