Abstract
S. G. Batyreva’s monograph presents the results of scientific research on the history of the formation and study of Buddhist art collection in Kalmyk Science Center of Russian Academy of Science. The materials of this collection were gathered from 1999 until 2016 and were described and analyzed by the author in 2014–2016. S. Batyreva’s Monograph shows the results of detailed research of collection and consists of two parts: 1. The Investigation of the collection and 2. Collection’s catalogue. 1. There are four main themes. S. G. Batyreva’s investigation reflects the specific nature of the formation of Buddhist collections in the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century in Kalmykia and reveals the historical reasons for the current situation of their study. S. Batyreva provides a general view of the collection in the light of ethnic specificity of Buddhist iconography. The author considers the identified Kalmyk, Buryat, Mongolian, Tibetan versions of works of Buddhist art as a part of cultural heritage of Kalmykia. Batyreva’s analysis of the Kalmyk sacral artistic tradition revealed visible local features of iconographic interpretation on paintings (thankas), graphic images (parma), and sculptures. The author denoted a problem of attribution of Buddhist art works by comparing and analyzing of different collections. 2. The catalogue compiled by Batyreva contains description of Buddhist paintings (thangkas, parma, tsakli, 96 items) and sculptures (round sculpture and relief, tsatsa, 52 items). As a result of the author’s description, the names of modern Kalmyk artists-thangka painters, sculptures and masters of arts and crafts were revealed and thus the anonymous tradition of canon performance was interrupted. S. G. Batyreva’s monograph is devoted to the cultural analysis of the tradition in the study of fine arts of Buddhism. It was formed during the interaction of tradition and innovation.
