Abstract
The article examines the key stages of the Western textual research concerning the restoration of the Sanskrit version of Heart Sutra: critical edition of the text by Edward Conze, hypothesis of the origin of the text proposed by Jan Nattier, accents and hypotheses in the contemporary scientific discussion. The article focuses on Nattier’s hypothesis that the text originated as a reverse translation from the Chinese short version of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā, and on the implications of this hypothesis for the interpretation of the argumentation and the key terms of the text, as well as its translation. Emphasis is made on the textual feature that has not yet been in the proper focus of research: the nature of the use of implicit and non-implicit negative particles in the text. The translation of the text into Ukrainian is offered taking into account the considered accents on the basis of the comparative analysis of the texts from Konze’s critical edition and from the Electronic Sanskrit Buddhist Canon. The translation is accompanied by a brief commentary on the grammatical features of the text and by explanation of the decisions made in the process of translation. This translation is the first Ukrainian translation of the Heart Sutra directly from Sanskrit.
