Publication ethics

Declaration on Compliance with Publication Ethics

The Editorial Board of the academic journal “The World of the Orient” in its work is guided by the international ethical rules of scientific publications, which include the notion of decency, confidentiality, oversight of publications and prevention of possible conflicts of interest, etc.

In turn, the editorial staff follows the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics and, in particular, the Publishing Ethics Resource Kit of Elsevier Publishing, as well as the experience of authoritative international publishing houses. Compliance with the rules of ethics of scientific publications by all participants in the publishing process ensures the rights of authors to intellectual property, improving the quality of the publication and preventing the possibility of improper use of authors’ materials in the interests of individuals.

Peer-review procedure

All the articles provided for review have their original text tested for the level of uniqueness determined by using the appropriate software that shows the uniqueness of the article, sources used and coincidence of the text (“Advego Plagiatus”, “eTXTAntiplahiat”). If the uniqueness of the manuscript is confirmed, it is sent directly for review.

All articles submitted to the Editorial Board pass the peer-review procedure; it is focused on the most objective assessment of the content of the academic paper, determining its compliance with the requirements of the journal and provides a comprehensive analysis of its advantages and disadvantages.

The peer-review is conducted confidentially on the principles of double “blind” review (when neither the author nor the reviewer knows about each other). The interaction between the author and the reviewer (reviewers) takes place through the Editor-in-chief of the journal.

Academic papers are anonymously reviewed by members of the Editorial Board of the journal and invitees, including from other countries, who have profound professional knowledge and experience in a particular academic field.

The Editor-in-chief and the executive secretary make a decision as to the selection of an appropriate reviewer for the submitted paper. The reviewers are to be selected based on their close research interests and experience in studying the topic. However, those working in the same project or the same department with one of the authors are not proposed to be the reviewers of the paper in order to keep the objectiveness of the review. This also applies to the scientific supervisors of the applicants for a degree.

Reviewers assess the contributions according to a rubric, which includes a number of criteria: readability of the title; topicality of the article; matching the journal’s area of focus; the degree of interest in the topic for both specialists and large readership; the article's compliance with the profile and the scope of the journal; field and contribution type (fundamental, interdisciplinary, or applied, survey, review article); academic novelty; practical relevance of data, conclusions and recommendations; references to reliable research sources; reliance on empirical studies (including those conducted by the author(s)); correct style and formatting of the contribution, its abstracts, keywords and references in accordance with the journal’s guidelines.

If the reviewer recommends correcting or improving the paper, the editor sends the anonymous review text to the author to make the relevant changes. The date of receipt of the paper by the journal is the day when the final version of the paper is sent to the editorial office.

Responsibilities of reviewers

Peer reviewers of the journal acknowledge that expert opinion helps the editors in decision-making and are in close cooperation with editors in many issues including ethical ones.

Any selected reviewer who does not have the appropriate qualifications for reviewing the study or who knows that the review can not be fulfilled at the appointed time must inform the editor and refuse the review process.

Any manuscript received by an expert for review is a confidential document. It cannot be discussed with anyone other than the Editor-in-chief or members of the Editorial Board during the meeting (if the reviewer is a member of the Editorial Board).

Reviewers will express their point of view, reinforcing it with appropriate arguments. Peer reviewers must express their views clearly and objectively. Personal criticism on authors is unacceptable.

Reviewers should identify relevant published works that were not named by the authors. Any statement, observation, conclusion or argument that has already been made should be accompanied by relevant references. The reviewer should also draw the attention of the editors to any significant similarity between the manuscript reviewed and any other published work in this area.

Reviewers are obliged not to consider manuscripts for which they have a conflict of interest as a result of competitive or other relationships and relationships with any of the authors or institutions associated with the submitted research.

Unpublished materials that appeared in a reviewed manuscript should not be used in the reviewer’s own works. Non-public information or ideas, acquired during the peer review, should remain confidential and not be used for personal benefits.

Obligations of the editorial board

The Editorial Board does not disclose any information about the submitted manuscripts to anyone other than authors, reviewers, potential reviewers. The Editorial Board shall be in close cooperation with the reviewers providing them with instructions on dealing with the submitted papers and guidelines on technical, organizational and ethical issues.

The final decision on the publication of the paper and on its terms is taken by the Editorial Board (based on the conclusions of the reviewer (reviewers)), and the editor informs the author of it.

The Editorial Board evaluates the manuscripts according to their intellectual content, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnic origin, citizenship or political philosophy of the authors.

The Editor-in-chief, members of the Editorial Board, as well as the reviewers have the right to publish their papers in the journal, but they may not take advantage of their positions. All papers (including articles of guest editors) are subject to the procedure of peer-reviewing.

The Editorial Board members should not be involved in taking decisions on papers in which they have a conflict of interests because of competing, joint or other forms of relations with the author, companies or other organizations related to the paper.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to editorially correct the paper (to correct terminological, stylistic, factual and other mistakes, to remove unnecessary illustrations, to shorten the text) in a way that does not distort its content.

Rejected papers are not reviewed again.

The Editorial Board is ready to consider reasoned criticism of the papers published in the journal and to accept papers discussing the published manuscripts. The authors of criticized papers will be given the opportunity to respond.

The Editorial Board should not reverse decisions on accepting a submitted paper or retract a paper unless serious problems arise in connection with its submission (misconduct of the author, errors or misleading statements). In case of any claims concerning the accepted submissions or published papers, the Editorial Board shall initially contact the authors and ask them to respond to the concerns and clarify the situation. If that response is unsatisfactory, an investigation may be requested.

In case if misconduct of an author is revealed during the reviewing of the paper or pre-print works, the Editorial Board can retract the paper from further reviewing, halt the cooperation with the author and inform his/her institution about his/her misconduct. If misconduct of the author is revealed after the publication (redundant publication, copyright violation, plagiarism, etc.), the Editorial Board has the right to retract the publication from the journal website, archive database, and indexing and inform other journals (where his/her redundant paper was published), as well as the author’s employer, of his/her misconduct. At the same time, the Editorial Board can forbid accepting for publication manuscripts from the author of the retracted article for a certain period.

Changes in any item of the editorial policies shall be promptly declared on the relevant pages of the journal website.

Responsibilities of the authors

The authors must ensure that the submitted work is original and has not been published elsewhere in any language. If the authors used the work and/or the words of others, the corresponding references were made. If any part of the work has been published in other papers, authors should cite previous work and indicate the significant difference of present work from preceding one. Literal copying of own works and/or rephrases are unacceptable, preceding works can only be used as a basis for new conclusions.

The authors of the original research should provide an accurate report on the work performed, as well as characterize its significance. The text of the study should contain sufficiently detailed information and references. Fraudulent or deliberately inaccurate statements are unethical behavior and are unacceptable. The author should not generally publish a text that essentially describes one and the same research in more than one journal. Submission of a manuscript to more than one journal is at the same time an unethical behavior and is unacceptable.

Authors submit their own papers to the journal sui juris with no middlemen and should be ready to interact with editors during the reviewing and pre-print process, in particular, be ready to revise the article, correct or specify some of the information therein, including the bibliography, also to read the proofs.

Appropriate recognition of the work of others should always be present in the submitted for consideration of scientific work. The authors should mention and refer to the publications that influenced their research.

If using text of graphical information from other sources, link to corresponding publication or written permission from the author should be present.

Information obtained in private way as a result of talks, letters or discussions with third parties should not be utilized without written permission from the source.

Any sort of plagiarism is treated as misconduct and is unacceptable.

Authors are obliged to participate in the peer-review process; the authors are obliged to provide retractions or corrections of mistakes; authors should provide a list of references, financial support of research if any.

The authors are to adhere to the standards of the non-confessional academic writing and not to present their texts from a confessional standpoint.

The authors should also take into account the following: the editorial board exercises strict control over excessive (no more than 2 or 3 references) and unjustified citation of their own publications, in case of detection of such phenomena, such publications will not be accepted for publication.

The authorship should be limited to those who made a significant contribution to the concept, performance or interpretation of the submitted research. All those who have made a significant contribution should be listed as co-authors. Existing copyright laws and conventions should be respected. Scientific and literary editing of a text or its translation into English, provision of consultations, raw or unpublished data, and organizational or financial assistance is not considered a sufficient basis for granting a person the status of co-author of a study. Such persons are thanked at the end of the publication (in particular, the contribution of anonymous reviewers can be mentioned here). Listing as authors persons, who have not made significant intellectual contribution to the manuscript, is a violation of the copyright and misconduct as not only it does mislead the readers, but also is treated as a fraud.

Responsibility for infringement of copyright and non-compliance with existing standards in the materials of the article rests with the author of the article. Responsibility for the validity of the conclusions and recommendations made and the scientific and practical level of the articles are the responsibility of the author and the reviewer.

Authors are allowed to place their final PDF files provided by the “The World of the Orient” on their personal or institutional websites and, if necessary, transfer these files to the archives.

Libel, Defamation and Freedom of Expression

Freedom of expression is critical to us as academic publishers, but we do not support publishing false statements that harm the reputation of individuals, groups, or organizations.

Image Manipulation, Falsification and Fabrication

Where research data are collected or presented as images, modifying these images can sometimes misrepresent the results obtained or their significance. We recognize that there can exist legitimate reasons for modifying images, but we expect the authors to avoid modifications that may lead to the falsification, fabrication, or misrepresentation of the results of their research.

Fraudulent Research and Research Misconduct

Where we are made aware of fraudulent research or research misconduct by our authors, our first concern is the academic integrity. Any publication found to include fraudulent results will be retracted, or an appropriate correction or expression of concern will be issued.

Integrity of Record

We maintain a record of the existence of everything we publish with information (metadata) describing each publication. If our content is deemed not to comply with the laws of a sovereign nation, we make every effort to ensure the metadata remain accessible within that jurisdiction. Where we are obliged to alter the publication record in any way, such as in the case of research misconduct leading to retraction of a publication, we preserve the academic record as far as possible.
