Abstract

The travel writings of Ogier Ghiselin de Busbecq and Stephanus Gerlach contain the ethnological data of high importance. They describe funeral rites of the Serbs as well as of the Bulgarians of the 16th century, some features of which show the great influence of the substrate Iranian-speaking population. It could be a weighty argument in the scientific discussion about the ethnogenesis of these Balkan nations.
