Abstract
This is the 1st article in a tripartite series on the construction of social and political other in the discourse of the Arab Spring in Egypt. Egyptian revolutionary discourse has coined a new concept for the enemy/opponent FULŪL, which will be analyzed in detail in subsequent two articles in this series. We found that the key if not the only precedential text related to this concept is an old Arabic proverb, which shows high frequency in the revolutionary discourse as one of the January 25 revolution semi-official slogans. The present article provides a frame-semantic analysis of the proverb lā yafullu al-ḥadīd illā al-ḥadīd (nothing but the iron notches the iron), conveying a meaning similar to that of the English proverb one nail drives out another.
