Abstract
The article deals with the role played by the traveler’s notes, later published as a book “The Letters from foreign lands”, by J. Okunewski, a high-ranking officer of Austro-Hungarian Navy at the end of the XIXth century in popularization of knowledge about the East in Ukraine. He described the life of Oriental countries which he visited during his travels (Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, India, Ceylon, China), and peculiarities of their everyday life, culture, languages, religions, depicted historical monuments and nature. His notes written with sympathy for oppressed peoples presented for Ukrainian readers objective information about unknown countries widening thus their horizons.
