Анотація
Актуальна в історичній науці проблема раннього індійського націоналізму (кін. ХІХ – поч. ХХ ст.) розкривається з перспективи західних впливів на його розвиток у північних провінціях. Аналіз праць учасників національного руху з цього регіону продемонстрував закономірність, із якою націоналісти зверталися до західного спадку. Більшість належала до консервативної лінії в націоналістичному русі та зверталася до примордіалістських концепцій нації, послуговуючись ідеями європейських сходознавців, мислителів німецького романтизму, модерною періодизацією історії та модерними уявленнями про релігію. Меншість, яка належала до ліберальної лінії, опиралася винятково на англійську ліберальну філософію. Таким чином, культурний націоналізм виявився актуальнішим для мислителів зазначеного регіону.
